Over the years I have amassed a collection of photographs, postcards, stamps, pamphlets and assorted ephemera. I keep them in a box and every so often, I revisit them to find some creative inspiration, or fall into a rabbit hole of nostalgia for moments I didn’t personally experience. These peeks into the past, unlikely remnants of quotidian matter, beat the odds of surviving decades (even a century!) despite their intended disposability. They ended up in junk shops, estate sales, thrift stores and craft fairs waiting for some sentimental sap like myself to spend a few dollars on them and give them new life.
But even within my collection, over time I felt more and more that they deserved to be shared with others. So here it is: a selection of my collection published online for your viewing pleasure. I call it re:collection. I hope you enjoy these ephemeral delights as much as I have.
Though I include photography in this collection, I don’t really consider photos to be ephemera. Photos show moments the photographers felt were worthy of remembering, and of bringing with them into the future. It feels a bit weird sometimes holding other peoples’ memories with no context or personal tie. So, if you recognize anyone in the photos you see here, please reach out and let me know! I’m happy to return any postcards, letters, and photographs to their original owners, relatives, descendants, etc.
